parks & recreation
The City of Slater takes great pride in the three parks and recreational opportunities that are available. Slater has always been a leader in providing the best equipment and facilities for our citizens. Our park system offers lighted basketball and tennis courts, baseball and multi-purpose fields, a public swimming pool, horseshoe pits and kiddy park and shaded picnic areas. In just the past two years, Slater has spent over $25,000.00 on playground equipment and $50,000.00 on facilities and equipment. Our award winning downtown Veteran's Park has picnic facilities as well as a beautiful water garden, memorial bricks and exquisite murals depicting the history of Slater and honoring all who have served in our country's military. The city also offers two buildings that are available for rent for private parties or events. Our 'Volk Fest Building' is located in the city park and has been host to activities that range from a livestock auction to a teen dance. The Slater Youth Center is a alcohol and tobacco free facility that is also available for various functions. Our two year old Youth Center is a cooperative effort between the city and various local civic and religious organizations. The center is open at least once a week, with volunteer, adult chaperone's that oversee the activities. The building was purchased and renovated by the city and is now maintained and operated by a Board of Directors that is responsible for all aspect of its operation.
