History

SHAPES was started in Spring 2000, when several Slater High School Alumni and Slater High School teachers decided that the school system needed greater financial support than is possible through the tax base. An alumnus’ association was considered as a way to involve those most interested in maintaining the school, who are not just parents or residents of the district.

Who we are

Our membership consists of those who have graduated from Slater High School, Slater, Missouri. Actual membership is automatic. However, we accept membership dues, currently $15.00 per calendar year, to assist in our efforts to raise money for improving the educational aspects of the district. We work with our members respective classes to acquire our name list and will gladly provide the list to a class in preparation of a reunion or other event.

We currently have a list of over 2,000 names, but only have 1,700 addresses. We are also missing names from several classes. Missing years since 1936 are 1937, 1939, 1942, 1943, 1948, 1951, 1953, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1993 and all subsequent years. If you have moved since your last reunion E-Mail us! Our e-mail address is SHAPES@cityofslater.com, or you may contact us via U.S. Mail at the address above.

Our Plans

Forming a new association takes a lot of planning, organization, coordination and time. As we continue to proceed, we want to provide equipment, books, technology, assistance, and almost any other help the district needs that are not readily available through grants or capital bond issues.

Our primary focus is to assist the district in academic educational issues. This could take the form of, but not limited to, new projection equipment, technology items including computers and computer labs, software, printers, smart boards, calculators, supplemental text books, maps, posters, special teacher training, or any other items a teacher may need to enhance their discipline’s efforts. There is an Athletic Booster Club to supports the sports extra curricular activities.

We accept ideas for projects from alumni and community members as well as the school. Working together we can keep Slater Public School among one of the best small schools in Missouri!

What We Have Done

Almost all of our monies are to be given to the Slater Public School for use in the betterment of the classroom environment.  Our expenses consist mainly of the post office box and postage for our mailings.  As our income improves, we will post our audits to show you exactly where your money goes.

During the spring of 2004, S.H.A.P.E.S. solicited ideas from the faculty of Slater Public Schools of items they needed to enhance their educational settings.  As a result, we purchased over $9,000.00 in items to support the students of Slater School.  Click here for a list of the gifts.   This contribution was our cash receipts of three years.

Officers and Board Members

Our current officers and Board members for 2004 - 2005 are:

Debby Hinnah, President, 1967
John Markovich, PD, Vice-president, 1965
Stephen Jaeger, Membership List Administrator, 1975
Myra Jones, A+ Coordinator, 1954
Tim Trimble, 1974
Nancy Haynes, 1974
Sandy Copeland, 1973
John Wayne Pemberton, 1968
Carolyn Erickson, 1959
Gayle Roder, 1975
Stephanie Newman, 1991

Our current Board of Directors and officers were asked or volunteered to serve. We are also looking for a few more persons to help us, as either a board member, or who will volunteer to assist us in our functions. Eventually, we would like to have a representative of each decade from the 1940s to 2000s. As you can see, we are well represented from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. If you would like to assist the association, please contact us.
